Hello, Writers!
It's the first day of July, and I asked on social media what your goals for the month are, so I decided to talk a little bit about goals and how they help you actually finish your projects!
Today is the beginning of a new month, so it's a great time to map out some writing goals for the month. It can be huge, like finishing a novel for CampNaNoWriMo, or small, like submitting to a couple of agents you have been cyber-stalking on Twitter. But, no matter what they are, it's important to say them out loud and write them down!
When you write your goals and tell others about them, you are more likely to reach them.
Think about anything you do in life and how you do them because you have it set up somewhere. For example, you are going to dinner, you write it down on your calendar, and you go. Boom! Goal met. You apply for 3 new jobs and interviews; before you did that, you had it written down, and most likely, you told your closest peeps.
You take your dog out for 3 walks a day. That's a goal.
You go to the gym 4-5 times a week; also a goal.
In everyday life, we use goals all the time but don't even realize it.
When we are on social media and talk about things we are doing, we set ourselves up for success and don't even realize it.
I'm voting in the presidential election on Tuesday. I'm watching the results. I'm getting my vaccines on these days. I'm turning in my novel to my editor or agent. I'm going on a first date; we are getting married; I have a big project due---you get the point.
So why not do that for your creative writing goals?
Because it's scary to put yourself out there, and you know that when you say "I'm writing a novel or screenplay," that people will ask you if you finished and when it will be published or out in the cinema. Usually, that makes writers feel less confident.
BUT it's a great thing because it keeps you accountable and also pushes you to make your writing goals a priority.
So, this month. I want YOU to write down three goals for your writing career. Whatever they are, big or small. Write them down and share them on social media.
